Product Details

Larry Rivers (1923-2003) was a pioneering American artist and founding father of Pop Art. His combination of abstraction with commercial imagery was a precursor to the Pop Art movement.

In the late 1940's Rivers studied at the Hans Hoffman School before completing his BA at NYU in 1951. Despite studying under Hoffman, Rivers continued to include elements of figuration, specifically the body - challenging existing notions of modernism.

Beginning in the late 60's Rivers embraced printmaking enhancing it with stencilling, airbrushing, and assemblage. During this era he also became a central figure of the legendary Chelsea Hotel artist community and frequent guest at Warhol's Factory.

Rivers was fascinated by the human body and often featured both male and female nudity in his works. Brash and brilliant, like the best of River's works, "Girlie" fuses abstraction and figuration in a collage style nude.

The subject of "Girlie" is a woman, in provocatively revealing lingerie, poised coquettishly before a sofa. Her body appears to be created by a combination of hand drawing, bold saturated fields of monochromatic color, and appropriated imagery. These elements are further enhanced by the reflective metallic silver background.

This screenprint is included in the collections of the and the in London.

River's works can be found in the permanent collections of many of the most prestigious art institutions globally including; The Guggenheim Museum (NY), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) (NY), the Whitney Museum (NY), the National Gallery (Washington D.C.), and the Centres Pompidou (Paris).
